Musicians Strike Up! Medieval music stories and songs,

Saturday, 26 September 2026, from 6.30pm to 10pm. The Old Palace, Worcester Cathedral (WR12JD).

The Old Palace will host an evening of medieval music featuring de Mowbray's Musicke, a specialist group of musicians, as they bring to life the musical instruments of the famous Luttrell Psalter. 

The Luttrell Psalter, commissioned by Sir Geoffrey Luttrell in the 1330s, is considered one of England's most significant medieval manuscripts, with over 600 pages adorned with beautifully illustrated scenes of medieval life. 

The audience will be able to enjoy a performance inspired by the psalter in the grandeur of the Great Hall, witness 17 medieval musical instruments being played, learn more about the life of Sir Geoffrey Luttrell, and view a copy of the manuscript.

Learn about the life and estates of Sir Geoffrey Luttrell who lived in the 1200s and 1300s. He commissioned a beautiful book of prayers and the psalms. It has been described as ‘England’s most significant medieval manuscript’. It’s in the British Library. On most of its over 600 pages there are scenes of medieval life, beautifully illustrated in the margins.

The psalter's significance to musicians is that the book contains images of 17 different musical instruments, and in this event you will see and hear all of those different instruments. During the interval you will be able to see the group’s own folio copy of the psalter as well as see their instruments close up and learn how they were made and used.
