Along the line, there’s plenty of springtime activity with swathes of green and yellow covering the fields along the route.

Visitors with children will want to make a beeline for The Engine House at Highley, where 18 Brick Live™ installations are on display, including an octopus, parrot fish, turtle and large squid. Each one is hand-built, using thousands of bricks.

Families can also let off steam in the outdoor play area, or get hands-on sorting mail in the Travelling Post Office. Entry to The Engine House is free, but parking is limited, so the best way to get there is by heritage train.

Along the line, the cafes, refreshment kiosks and gift shops will be open for treats and snacks to enjoy during a visit.

On the weekend of 8-9 June, there’ll be plenty of family fun at the railway with appearances from the energetic and much-loved TV character Hey Duggee. Families can take an exciting heritage train ride out to The Engine House, Highley and see Duggee, who will be appearing at regular intervals throughout the day. This May, breathe in the beauty of springtime at Witley Court and Gardens – a magnificent country house in the heart of Worcestershire.

Witley was once one of the great stately homes of England, reaching its peak as a Victorian party palace. After a devastating fire, it became one of the country’s most spectacular ruins.

Grab a picnic and wander around the beautiful gardens, lake, and ornate fountains – a magical world to explore as the season bursts to life. Soak up the colours of the rhododendrons, look out for carpets of bluebells in the woodlands and discover a play area inspired by nature.

All visitors, young and young-at heart, can step back in time and discover the world of traditional Victorian games! Swing your mallet with precision at croquet or test your aim to topple the skittles. Learn all about which games are no longer played and which have stood the test of time. Fancy a bit of competition? Try your hand at timeless board games and compete with your friends and family. Will you be the champion of the day?

With blooming flowers, birdsong and acres to roam, Witley Court is the perfect place for a springtime adventure.

The Commandery

Celebrate historic Oak Apple Day at The Commandery, Worcester.

Bank Holiday Monday 27 May, 10am – 4pm

Oak Apple Day celebrations promise an exciting day of fun bringing history to life on Bank Holiday Monday 27 May at The Commandery, in the heart of historic Worcester.

The spectacular Grade-1-listed Commandery – the Royalist Headquarters during the Battle of Worcester – will be alive with reenactors, military demonstrations, history talks and more. Visitors can watch musket firing take place in the picturesque walled gardens, and children can take part in pike drills throughout the day.

Fascinating talks will transport visitors back to the time of the Civil War – and people can take a short walking tour up to Fort Royal Hill where fighting took place during the final battle in 1651.

This spring tradition marks the anniversary of the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 following the English Civil War – and has a special connection to the city of Worcester, the scene of the deciding battle of the Civil War in 1651. Nine years after Charles II hid from Parliamentarian troops in an oak tree following the loss of his Royalist cause at the Battle of Worcester, he returned to the throne on his thirtieth birthday, 29 May 1660 – which became the annual celebration of Oak Apple Day, now only celebrated in a handful of places in the country.

There is no booking required for Oak Apple Day, and usual entry admission applies.
