William Boers of family-run business, Westlands, located in the Vale of Evesham, talks about what keeps the business thriving and what inspires them, as one of Taste Worcestershire’s food heroes.
- Could you tell us a little bit about your background?
Westlands is a multi-generational family business that started over 80 years ago in the Netherlands, so naturally, growing has always been in our blood. Now, 80 years after us starting the business in the Vale of Evesham, the same principles of personal care and product quality have been passed down from generation to generation. Our speciality produce is now used in world-class kitchens and bars across the UK.
- Can you tell us why you are called what you are (is there a story/meaning behind this)?
Taking inspiration from our Dutch heritage, Westlands’ namesake originates from a region in western Netherlands.
- Is there a reason why you’re based where you are?
The Vale of Evesham has always been known for its great soil to grow in. Time, growing methods and technology have moved on since then, so we have moved a lot of production away from soil grown to help with consistent supply and quality all year round.
- How would you describe your business to someone who isn’t aware of you?
We are British speciality growers of Micro Leaves, Edible Flowers, Sea Vegetables, Inspired Leaves and Speciality Tomatoes, all grown in the Vale of Evesham. We use the latest techniques and cutting-edge technology to grow our Edible Flowers, Micro Leaves and other Speciality Produce. As growers, every step of our process, from the seeds we sow, to the relationships we forge with suppliers and chefs is tended to with the utmost care and attention. Our products feature in top bars and restaurants in the UK, and we pride ourselves on our fast delivery, huge product range and the quality of freshness.
- What makes your business different?
We have a large focus on sustainability. From utilising rainwater, to using recyclable packaging, to using recycled fabric offcuts instead of soil, we care about looking after our Earth for the next generation. We are the UK's largest grower of Samphire, plus we are one of the only British growers of fresh Wasabi Rhizomes.
- What’s your favourite product that you grow?
How could we ever pick! We love every leaf and petal we grow; however, we do have a soft spot for our delicious British grown Speciality Tomatoes.
- Could you tell us a bit about your industry awards or accolades you may have?
We are members of LEAF Marque (Linking the Environment and Farming), an environmental assurance system, recognising sustainably farmed products. Using an Integrated Crop Management strategy throughout our growing sites, we introduce beneficial predatory insects and mites to help control pests.
We work hard to maintain and exceed high expectations so that, when customers choose us, they know they’re choosing the best. Accredited by Red Tractor, we can confidently assure that our British-grown products, from Edible Flowers to Speciality Tomatoes, are 100% traceable.
- What can we expect to see from you over the coming months?
Keep an eye on our Instagram - @westlandsuk – and watch this space for future updates!
- How do you keep up with the latest food trends?
We have a fantastic community of passionate chefs, who really push the boundaries of food norms. They are our main source of inspiration, and it's cultivating these relationships that allows us to stay up to date with trends and get ahead of the curve. We take pride in our innovative and ever-growing product range, so having our fingers on the pulse when it comes to what chefs want, is very important to us.
- Who or what inspires/motivates you?
Again, our awesome chef community is our main motivation. We love what we do, because we love seeing others using our produce! Building these genuine, honest connections with our community is such an honour to us.
- How do you come up with new ideas/products/dishes?
Our chef community is a constant source of inspiration for us. When we see them doing what they love, it inspires us to push the boundaries and continue to be innovative. Having regular conversations, welcoming them on site and working collaboratively all helps us to be as great as we are!
“We work with and supply businesses and chefs both regionally and country wide, and we’re proud to be located in the centre of Worcestershire, so we’re thrilled to be part of the Taste of Worcestershire campaign.” - William Boers, Growing Manager, Westlands.
